1. Why does the Fire District send a fire truck when I request an ambulance?

When you call for a medical emergency the St. Lucie County Fire District will dispatch a Rescue Truck, which is equipped to manage almost any medical or traumatic emergency we encounter. Depending on the nature of your emergency and the location of our closest unit a Fire Engine may also be sent.

It is our goal to deliver enough personnel as rapidly as possible to deal with the emergencies that we are called to. Significant medical calls such as; heart attacks, severe breathing problems, gunshot wounds and auto accidents may require more personnel than can be sent initially in the Rescue Truck. Sending a Fire Engine ensures that we send a team large enough to handle your emergency fast enough to make a difference in the outcome.

Sending these trucks in this way is in compliance with national standards that aim to ensure that you receive a timely and effective response from our agency to your emergency.

2. Where can I find out about CPR classes?

For business or organizations not seeking certification, fill out the Public Relations Request form under the "Our Community>Programs Services" tab. For Healthcare Provider, Basic Life Support, or other credentialing courses please contact the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Indian River State College, Emergency Medical Consultants, or Community Health Certification.

3. How do I get a burn authorization?

All burn authorizations are issued by the Florida Forest Service, which can be reached at (863) 467-3221. Florida Forest Service website

4. Are there regulations on how long you can have your storm shutters up?

Many localities are issuing regulations about storm shutters for safety reasons. In case of fire, storm shutters hinder the firefighters ability to get to the source of the fire. At this time no regulations are in place in St. Lucie County. However, such regulations would need to be passed by the St. Lucie County Commission.

5. What rules or regulations apply to gas containers stored by residents for personal use?

With the hurricanes many residents store gas containers for their generators. Gas is highly flammable, and therefore should be stored in an appropriate container. Check the manufacturers instructions. In addition, these containers should be stored in a safe place away from the main residence.

6. My house caught fire and I need a report for the insurance company. Who do I contact?

Fire Incident Reports can be received by calling the Fire Prevention Bureau at 772-621-3322.

7. The fire hydrant in front of my house started to leak. Who do I call to fix it?

Any leaking or broken fire hydrants should be reported to Public Works or the Water and Sewer Authority.
- For Ft. Pierce, call Ft. Pierce Utilities at 772-466-1600.
- For the City of Port St. Lucie call Port St. Lucie Utilities at 772-873-6400.
- If you live in a rural area of the county call St. Lucie Utilities at 772-462-1150.

8. I’m a new resident and the alarm company for my house has requested the phone number of the station closest to my home?
