Personal Protective Equipment
The PPE/SCBA Division is responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance, repair, and lifecycle management of the St. Lucie County Fire District's personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The Division ensures firefighters are provided with safe, compliant, and reliable equipment that meets applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and supports operational readiness.
The Division oversees the cleaning, inspection, repair, testing, and tracking of structural firefighting gear, dual-purpose bunker gear, SCBA air packs, facepieces, and other protective equipment. Through comprehensive maintenance and quality assurance programs, the Division helps ensure personnel are properly equipped and protected while performing their duties.
In 2025, the PPE/SCBA Division cleaned and inspected more than 7,400 pieces of protective equipment, repaired nearly 600 items, flow tested more than 600 SCBA facepieces, and tested and serviced 250 SCBA air packs. The Division also outfitted 116 firefighters with structural and dual-purpose bunker gear.
The Division achieved NFPA 1850 Certification in Advanced PPE Cleaning and Inspection, maintained its MSA Certified SCBA Room, and opened a state-of-the-art PPE facility at Station 18 to improve equipment turnaround times and lifecycle management. Through these efforts, the PPE/SCBA Division helps ensure Fire District personnel have the protective equipment necessary to safely deliver immediate, skillful, and professional emergency services to the community.
